Crazy Beautiful Soul

The Alchemy of Surrender

By Liliana Herrera Gutierrez

This work exists at the threshold between surrender and sovereignty, a body baptized in soul water. Light inhales as it finally comes up for air, a fire many desired and tried to dim, yet never could.

As the oldest and only daughter in a Mexican household, strength arrived early and stayed long. I learned to lead, to protect, to endure. Survival shaped me into hyper-independence, a kind of self-wrapping armor. That instinct followed me into adulthood and into long relationships, where I lived primarily in my masculine energy, holding structure and carrying weight that was not always meant to be mine. What once kept me safe was no longer sustainable, yet I did not know how to release it.

Softness was never absent. It lived in my self-expression, in the way I dressed, created, and adorned myself. It showed up in art, in confidence, in beauty. But it did not live in my relationships or family dynamics. There, it felt conditional. Rest felt rare. Vulnerability felt unsafe.

I knew how to soften. I simply was not in spaces that allowed it to land. Without the right presence, armor remained. What I longed to embody could not take root where it was not met.

Water has always been my first sanctuary, where I go to drown out the noise and return to myself. It is where my mind sinks instead of races, where the surface cannot demand anything from me. Submerged, I feel at ease. Almost bliss. It is the closest I have known to being held without expectation. In water, I do not anticipate. I do not perform strength. I float.

This piece is an initiation. After years of loving through vigilance and restraint, tenderness returns as heat. The armor does not shatter; it warms and loosens. Not because it must, but because the body finally recognizes safety and disengages its defenses.

Surrender here is not collapse. It is submission without diminishment. A sacred submission that expands me. A resonance so steady the body responds before the mind negotiates. In that submission, I do not disappear. I glow. I am led, but I remain holy.

The crown does not sit upon her. It hovers. Forming. Remembering. Not given, not placed, but rising from what has always been hers. Sovereignty made visible.

It melts because I melt. Gold loosening at the edges under warmth. What was once guarded now flows freely. This is not a coronation by another. It is self-anointing. A goddess energy long contained, finally allowed to breathe.

There is a quiet reverence in being met fully.

“You bow your head when I enter the room.
You kiss the ground my feet touch.
Your hands trace the shape of my name...”

Not as hierarchy, but as recognition. Not ego, but equal devotion. A mirroring of power that does not compete, only honors.

This is not the loss of control. It is a deeper kind, rooted in embodiment, mutual respect, and the confidence of a woman who knows her lineage, her fire, and her worth.

I come from women forged in pain and spirit, from healers, dreamers, seers, and quiet warriors who have howled at the moon and read the stars without apology. From instinct. From intuition. From endurance. From survival. What was once carried as burden through generations, I am finally free to carry as power.

Not everything can stand in that light. Only what is steady, remains.

This work is about being held without being diminished. About no longer having to lead every room, every love, every weight alone. About floating luminous and unguarded and, for the first time, allowing myself to be led without losing myself.

Love and be loved.
